Impossibile non rimanere sbalorditi davanti alle altissime colonne ancora integre di questo tempio costruito nel 515 a.C. in onore di Zeus.
La maggior parte della struttura venne distrutta da un terremoto nel Medioevo e delle 104 originarie colonne corinzie se ne conservano solo 15. Una sedicesima giace sull’antica pavimentazione del tempio, abbattuta da una tempesta nel 1852, le cue mastodontiche sezioni ben definite danno un’idea perfetta della grandiosità della struttura di un tempo.
La parte nord del sito ospita le rovine delle dimore romane, le mura cittadine e un bagno romano.
La valle dietro l’Olympieion, del fiume Ilisso, il fiume sacro delle Muse, è una zona disseminata di resti di antichi siti.
Dire “antichi” in realtà suona ridondante, visto l’ordine e la pulizia della città di Atene le rovine non possono che essere quelle dei Greci antichi.
Una gonna ricamata, secondo le ultime tendenze moda, è il capo protagonista dell’outfit indossato a spasso tra le rovine della capitale ellenica.

Impossible not to be stunned in front of the tall columns still intact in this temple built in 515 BC in honor of Zeus.
Most of the structure was destroyed by an earthquake in the Middle Ages and the 104 original Corinthian columns only 15 remain standing today, with lovely capitals still in place. One other column collapsed as recently as 1852 CE in a storm and now lies across the site with its column drums picturesquely spread along a perfect line.
The northern part of the site is home to the ruins of Roman houses, the city walls, and a Roman bath.The valley around the Olympieion and the Ilissos river, the sacred river of the Muses, is an area littered with the remains of ancient sites.
Say “ancient” actually sounds redundant, since the order and cleanliness of the city of Athens the ruins can only be those of the ancient Greeks.
