A 300 metri sul livello del mare, sulle alture del monte Bonadies, immerso in un incantevole scenario ricco di vegetazione e di storia, si erge il maestoso Castello di Arechi, che domina dall’alto la città di Salerno. 
La fortezza difensiva di quella che un tempo era la capitale del ducato, ha vissuto ben tre secoli di civiltà longobarda, ma in realtà il maniero esisteva già prima dell’avvento del duca Longobardo Arechi II.
Durante recenti indagini archeologiche è stato, infatti,verificato come la fase costruttiva più antica del castello risalga addirittura al periodo gotico-bizantino, ovvero il IV secolo.
Tuttavia, il maniero assunse una grande importanza militare nel XVIII secolo, quando il principe  Arechi ne fece fortezza inespugnabile, apportandovi delle necessarie modifiche.
Ne ordinò la sopra elevazione e decise di rinforzare le mura antiche, e così il castello divenne irraggiungibile dal nemico.
La struttura è costituita da un nucleo centrale protetto da torri, unite tra loro da una cinta muraria merlata e da ponti levatoi. A nord ovest è possibile ammirare la torre di guardia, detta della Bastiglia, così chiamata nell’800 perché ritenuta erroneamente una prigione, ma fu costruita per assicurare il controllo sul medesimo versante.
Dalle terrazze del castello lo scenario è mozzafiato, solo qui è possibile godere di un paesaggio suggestivo che permette, con un solo sguardo, di abbracciare e ammirare la città di Salerno e l’incantevole Costiera Amalfitana.

The Arechi Castle is a medieval castle, situated at a height of about 300 meters above sea level, overlooking the city and the Gulf of Salerno. 
It is said Arechi because the construction of this fortification is associated, traditionally, to the Lombard Duke Arechi II. The oldest building phase, according to some archaeological investigations, dates back to the sixth century and is the work of craftsmen goto-Byzantine at times of Narses.
The castle, however, assumed great military importance in the eighteenth century, with the Longobard Prince Arechi II who, although didn’t introduce major changes to the fort, made it the cornerstone of the defense system of the city. 
The castle currently consists of a central section protected by towers, joined together with crenelated walls. To the Norman-Angevin period belongs tower called the Bastille, on a hill overlooking Mount Bonadies northward; built to ensure control of the castle on the north, was so called because during the 800 mistakenly it was considered a prison (the real prisons were inside the castle).
From the terraces of the castle the scenery is breathtaking, only here you can enjoy a picturesque landscape that allows, at a glance, to embrace and admire the city of Salerno and the enchanting Amalfi Coast.
