La Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore sorge sul Colle Esquilino a Roma, è una delle quattro Basiliche patriarcali della città ed è considerata il più antico santuario mariano d’Occidente, la sola che abbia conservato le strutture paleocristiane.
Un autentico gioiello ricco di bellezze dal valore inestimabile. Da circa sedici secoli domina la città di Roma, rappresentando un punto di riferimento per i civites mundi che da ogni parte del globo giungono nella Città Eterna per godere ciò che la Basilica offre attraverso la sua monumentale grandezza.
Una tardiva leggenda narra che sia stata la Vergine Maria, apparendo nella notte del 5 agosto del 352 a Papa Liberio e ad un patrizio romano, ad invitarli a costruire una chiesa là dove al mattino avrebbero trovato la neve, che cadde copiosa in piena estate.
Il papa tracciò il perimetro di quella che sarebbe stata la più importante delle chiese romane dedicate alla Madonna, il ricco patrizio provvide al finanziamento del santuario che prese il nome di S.Maria “ad nives”, della neve.
Ancora oggi, ogni anno, il 5 agosto viene rievocato il miracolo della neve con un’apposita celebrazione durante la quale, dalla sommità della basilica, vengono liberati in aria dei petali bianchi che producono un effetto davvero suggestivo, da non perdere.
Indosso un outfit dal mood vagamente militare e un paio di comodi mocassini, mentre mi soffermo incantata a guardare i numerosi tesori contenuti nella Basilica, che rendono S. Maria Maggore un luogo dove arte e spiritualità si fondono in un connubio perfetto, offrendo ai visitatori emozioni uniche.

The Basilica of St. Mary Major is located on the summit of the Esquiline Hill in Rome, it is one of the four patriarchal basilicas of the city and is considered the oldest Marian sanctuary of the West, it is the only church to have retained its paleo-Christian structures.
A real jewel rich in priceless beauty. From about sixteen centuries overlooking the city of Rome, representing a reference point for civites mundi from all parts of the globe come to the Eternal City to enjoy what the Basilica offers through its monumental grandeur. It is still considered by many to be the most beautiful church in Rome after St Peter’s.
According to a 13th-century legend, the first church was built here by Pope Liberius (352-66), on the site of an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The legend has it that the Virgin appeared to Pope Liberius and the patrician Giovanni Patrizio on August 5, 352, instructing them to build a church on the Esquiline Hill. That night, the floor plan was outlined by a miraculous snowfall.
The first name of the church was Santa Maria “ad nives” , St. Mary of the Snow.
The legend of the miraculous snowfall is commemorated every year on August 5, when white rose petals are dropped from the dome during the festal Mass.
I’m wearing an outfit with a vaguely military mood and a pair of trendy loafers, enchanted as I stop to look at the many treasures contained in the Basilica, which make St. Mary Major a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors unique emotions.
