Costruito tra il 1869 e il 1870, lo stadio Panathinaiko è spettacolare sia per le sua storia che per la sua struttura. Nessun altra città al mondo è in grado di offrire uno stadio olimpico così antico, bello e suggestivo.
Fu ricostruito sull’antico stadio di Erode Attico, risalente al IV sec. a.C., restaurato e portato al suo attuale splendore, il suo primo momento di gloria arrivò nel 1896, anno delle prime Olimpiadi dell’era moderna.
Particolarmente imponente, è l’unico stadio al mondo costruito interamente in marmo bianco di Pendelis, lo stesso da cui fu ricavato il Partenone. 
La sua struttura ad U ospita fino a 70.000 spettatori e la sua sontuosa copertura, realizzata in un impressionante intreccio di tubi di acciaio e vetro azzurro, lo ha trasformato in una vera e propria opera d’arte architettonica.
E’ uno di quei luoghi che, in un periodo in cui non ha più molta importanza partecipare ad una competizione, ma vincere diventa fondamentale, ricorrendo spesso a sostanze dopanti, andrebbe visitato per ritrovare quello spirito decoubertiano dei primi Giochi Olimpici.

It was built between 1869 and 1870, the Panathinaiko stadium is spectacular for both its history and its structure. No other city in the world is able to offer an Olympic stadium so ancient, beautiful and charming.
It was rebuilt on the ancient stadium of Herod Atticus, dating from the fourth century. BC restored and brought to its present splendor, its first moment of
glory came in 1896, the year of the first modern Olympic Games.
Particularly impressive is the only stadium in the world built
entirely of white marble of Pendelis, the same used for the
Parthenon.
Its “U” structure accommodates up to 70,000 spectators and its lavish
cover, made of an impressive tangle of steel tubes and blue glass, 
has turned it into a true work of architectural art.
It is one of those places that, in a period in which no longer has much
importance participate in a competition, but winning is fundamental,
often resorting to doping substances, it should be visited to find that de Coubertin’s
spirit of the first Olympic Games.
