Marrakesh has been a trading town since the 11th century, and it can still satisfy the most ardent shopaholic. Its warren of souks are the quintessential Moroccan shopping experience.
Seven days a week, no matter how early you rise in the morning, there’s already someone in the souks ready to greet you.
The original market city, Morocco’s Medina, is in equal part a surreal cultural experience as it is a consumer’s idyll.
It is something of a fashion fantasyland: silk caftans are draped in storefronts; heaping piles of silk slippers fill warehouse-size markets; artisans crouch outside of their shops with hammers, transforming tarnished silver into statement necklaces.
Bargaining comes part and parcel when shopping in the Medina. The price you’ll first be quoted is usually always more than the real value of the item in question, so you’ll have to play the game if you want to get your money’s worth.
Ultimately, shopping in this colorful city is an experience as much as it is a transaction.
Getting lost in the Medina is half the fun: as a treasure hunting into a dizzying labyrinth of shopkeepers and artisans in winding alleyways of embossed leather goods, dimly flickering lanterns, with the sound of brass being hammered into pieces of jewelry and the scent of exotic spices, fruits, and incense.
If you’ve been looking around your riad with an enviable eye, wondering where the proprietor sourced their fabulous furniture and decorative items, wonder no more. Almost everyone in Marrakech has been to the Gallery Cherkaoui where the cavernous rooms are filled with furniture, lamps, glassware, rugs, and antiques from all over North Africa.
After a day of shopping and exploring this beautifully chaotic city, you’ll want to relax, and fortunately, Marrakesh has just the treat.
One of the most popular and traditional ways to unwind is by visiting a hammam, a Moroccan bathhouse. Hammams are found in every neighborhood in Marrakesh, and they are a weekly ritual for many locals, which is worth adopting while you’re here.

One of my favorites is “Pure Bliss Spa & Hamman” in the heart of the Medina.
