Il borgo di Casertavecchia, in mancanza
di documenti utili a datarlo, è dalla maggior parte degli studiosi
ritenuto coevo alla conquista longobarda del Meridione, a partire dal
570.
Il maniero fortificato sorse a guardia del
borgo, sul punto più alto del colle, come una sentinella sulla pianura e sulle
valli del Monte Virgo, ergendosi a difesa della Caserta medievale.
Il Castello perse il suo ruolo difensivo quando i Borbone promossero la
costruzione della Caserta settecentesca intorno alla loro Reggia, ma mantiene, ancora oggi, intatto il suo fascino.
L’attuale complesso conserva la distribuzione planimetrica irregolare, grosso modo ellittica.
L’enorme mastio circolare, dalla base in pietra, è da attribuire al
periodo svevo: esso era privo di porte e vi si accedeva dal castello
attraverso un ponte levatoio aereo. Il cosiddetto “Maschio” è tra i maggiori d’Europa.
Gli attuali resti del castello consentono di leggere agevolmente parte della
cinta muraria e le torri quadrangolari a difesa.

The village of Casertavecchia, in the absence of useful documents to
date it, is for most researchers considered to be the Lombards’ conquest
of the Southern Italy, starting from 570. 
The manor house stood guarding the village, on the highest point of the
hill, a sentinel on the plain and on the valleys of Mount Virgo, rising to
the defense of the medieval city of Caserta.
The castle lost its defensive role when the Bourbons promoted the
construction of  Caserta of eighteenth century around their realm, but
it still maintains its charm intact. 
The current complex retains the irregular elliptical layout. 
The
huge circular tower, from the stone base, is attributed to the
Swabian period: it was without doors and accessed from the castle
through an airlift bridge. It is called “Male” and it is one of the largest in Europe.
The castle’s ruins allow you to easily see part of the city wall and quadrangular towers in defense.
I’m
