300 anni, e sembra quasi emergere

Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most important religious edifices in Venice.
Its striking dome is depicted in most of the city’s postcards.
La Salute, as it is commonly known, was founded in 1631.
The basilica was built to commemorate the end of a terrible outbreak of the plague that began in 1630 and killed a large portion of the Veneto population. It was dedicated to Our Lady of Health (Salute in Italian).
The architect, Baldassare Longhena, was commissioned to design the church and had also been responsible for the construction of the Cà Rezzonico.
Santa Maria della Salute took 56 years to build and was completed in 1687.
It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the St. Mark’s Basin on the lagoon.
If you come to Venice by sea (and any other approach is like entering a palace through the back door) the most prominent of the myriad architectural marvels that greet you is the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
As if riding at anchor at the entrance to the Grand Canal, with its balloon-like dome weighed down by great baroque scrolls, this fabulous building dominates the scene even more than the Palazzo Ducale or San Giorgio Maggiore.
It is the supreme masterpiece of the Venetian Baroque:
the church is massive and awe-inspiring, with a huge central space surrounded by archways that lead to side chapels. The basilica and its dramatic steps of white Istrian stone are built on 1,156,627 wooden pilings that remain intact after more than 300 years.
