Nell’antico quartiere ebraico, i profumi ti solleticheranno

Since 1438, following the great wave of immigration of Jews from Spain fleeing the persecutions of the Reconquista, several urban mellahs were created on the Moroccan territory.
From Fez to Meknès, from Essaouira to Taroudant, from Rabat and Sale, and in Marrakech.
In Morocco, the Mellah is a term used to describe an area of residents of Jewish origin.

In cities across Morocco, there are Jewish Quarters that exist like a city within a city.
Each district is generally surrounded by high walls to separate them from other populations such as Christians and Muslims.
The Mellah of Marrakech is considered as one of the largest in Morocco.
You can still see some of the original storefronts and stores selling silver and pottery engraved with Hebrew or Jewish symbols. Other stores sell a variety of goods including herbs and spices.

Some of the houses in the Jewish Quarter have street-facing balconies that are not seen in Arabic homes.
The Alzama synagogue is a place of worship and study, in classrooms now transformed into a museum, fading color photographs tell the story of a now-dispersed community.
The synagogue courtyard has blue and white tiles decorating the walls and blue and white details on the lower and upper level where a balcony overlooks the courtyard. To off-set the blue and white there are potted plants and flowerbeds in the courtyard.
This is my first day in Marrakech and it’s a great way to experience its unique culture.

It is late spring here, I’m wearing only a sweater with a maxi voile skirt, while I get lost in the maze of alleys, in a real open-air labyrinth, surrounded by the walls of the Mellah.
