What to do with a city full of grim, high-rise flats? That was the dilemma that – like many post-Soviet cities – the Albanian capital of Tirana was faced with after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Its inhabitants seem to have found the answer: elect an artist as mayor.
When artist Edi Rama was elected mayor of Albania’s capital in 2000, he decided to transform the city into something, aesthetically speaking, entirely different.
When artist Edi Rama was elected mayor of Albania’s capital in 2000, he decided to transform the city into something, aesthetically speaking, entirely different.
Geometric patterns, polka dots, and giant trees started appearing on the walls of the city’s five-storey buildings.
Flashing his brush across many of Tirana’s old apartment buildings and communist-style high rises, Rama added color and design across the city.
The most used colors are blue, green, orange, purple, red, and yellow.

Tirana’s painted buildings are spread almost all around the city and people love these colors because they raised the spirit of this new emerging city.
And all this mixed infrastructure is making Tirana a unique city and one of the most colorful cities you’ll see in the Balkans.
All the buildings were painted by different painters, each with its own phantasy, no theme or guideline. Colors, shapes style all differ from one another and make each of them unique, so you can’t find two similar.
Today, the city is certainly eye-catching and uniquely modern, definitely an Instagram worthy city!
The New Bazaar is one of Tirana’s newest attractions and one of the most exciting places to visit in the city.
It’s a great example of the way Albania is developing and changing dramatically in recent years.
The Bazaar is located on Anvi Rustemi Square, less than a 10-minute walk from the center in the oldest part of the city, it is the new market and has terrific colorful geometric patterns.

It hosts some contemporary painted buildings, but it respects tradition and is giving back to the city the beauty and authenticity.
I’m wearing a colorful outfit, where a pleated maxi skirt is an absolute protagonist, for a walk that can convey a strong feeling of beauty, in a city that excites and produces hope, giving me a beautiful lesson in civilization.
