On the edge of the historic center and just a few steps from the harbor sits one of Bari’s most defining landmarks.
The Norman-Swabian Castle is an extensive and formidable structure that guarded the city for centuries. It’s also the most prominent and dominating of the many seafront fortresses that line up along the Puglian coast.
Positioned by the city’s main entrance, a few steps away from the Cathedral, the Castle today welcomes visitors before they head into the narrow alleyways of the historic center.
The Castle was originally built by the Normans in the 12th century but was later destroyed in 1156. Frederick II it rebuilt between 1233 and 1240, transforming it into one of the region’s most interesting fortresses, mainly thanks to its strategic position.
A fascinating example of medieval construction, it also retains elements that were added in successive extensions.
As we can see it nowadays, the castle is surrounded by the moat on three sides out of four because the fourth side was anciently touched by the sea.

We can also notice the enclosure of the castle that dates back to the Aragonese time.
The access to the castle is possible through the bridge and gate that we can find on the southern side of the building. The castle is mainly composed of the Aragonese walls and the main Swabian tower.
Today, the castle the headquarters of the Superintendency for Environmental, Architectural and Historical Heritage in Puglia.

I’m wearing a colorful twin-set and a pair of comfortable mom shorts, the cult piece of this summer so dear to our mothers, for a revisited vintage style, made more contemporary than ever… while crossing the moat and I seem to find myself in another era, when the castle was full of dames, knights, and wealthy intellectuals.
