The White Tower is perhaps the most recognizable spot in Thessaloniki.
With its distinctive cylindrical shape, its six stories and its memory-charged history, it has become the city’s trademark.
When one sets eyes on the White Tower, it means that one has made one of the most fascinating journeys and is in the city of a thousand promises.
The exact date of its construction is hidden in the mists of time. The initial suggestion that it was perhaps of Venetian construction, has not been accepted by archaeologists. Most likely it was built during the early Ottoman period, sometime after 1530. What is certain though is that this impressive piece of architecture was built on top of a pre-existing Byzantine building.
It is inextricably linked to the history of Thessaloniki. Its walls preserve the memories of the stormy course of this great city. It has never ceased to play an important role. A watchful sentry guarding over the precious city of Thessaloniki for the Ottomans, then a prison and torture chamber for unconquerable spirits.
The story goes that the structure was known as the Tower of Blood until a prisoner painted the tower of white, in order to purify it from the blood, in exchange for his liberty in 1890 when it was renamed Lefkos Pyrgos (White Tower). And, although the white paint is now gone, the Tower continues to retain this symbolic name.
Today the tower is open to the public while the visitors will have a chance to enjoy a wonderful panoramic view from its highest level, and a very beautiful and informative museum inside the monument is dedicated to the city’s history.
The White Tower, apart from being a great architectural monument, is a reference point in Thessaloniki. Dominating the shore, it has become a meeting point and a good place for a walk.
The hot season is coming and it’s time to start discovering our legs, but with style… once again the undisputed stars of elegance are pleated skirts.
I chose my lovely pleated skirt in a delicate pastel color, it’s the perfect ally of a comfy style, but absolutely sophisticated, even in the tourist version.
