Warsaw is notable among Europe’s capital cities not for its size, its age, or its beauty but for its indestructibility. It is a phoenix that has risen repeatedly from the ashes of war. the city was razed, and the buildings were systematically reduced to rubble. In 1945, however, the people of Warsaw, the Varsovians, returned, and the city resumed its role as the capital of Poland and the country’s center of social, political, economic, scientific, and cultural life. Many of the historical streets, buildings, and churches have been restored exactly according to their original forms. The city’s motto is, appropriately, “It defies the storms”.
Yet if any city rewards exploration, it is the Polish capital. With his stunning Baroque palaces and the meticulously reconstructed Old Town and two of Central Europe’s finest urban parks.
Today I’m walking in
Aleje Ujazdowskie, certainly the most beautiful street in Warsaw, a contemporary avenue surrounded by many notable historical villas,
parks and palaces, as well as politically important buildings. In the second half of the 19th century, a number of Polish aristocrats’
and industrialists’ villas and palaces were built along the route.
And
if winter has the courage to turn into spring, who says I can’t bloom just the same? I’m wearing a floral print outfit, so full of color, from this city that has bewitched me.
It
will be for that atmosphere a bit melancholic that you can breathe
everywhere, that deriving from the troubled history that this city and
this people have lived… a story that gave them the strength to start
and rebuild themselves every day from the rubble of their not too remote
past. An unexpectedly welcoming city that is ready to give a disarmingly kindness to every glance.
